How to Redecorate Your Home on a Budget

Now that spring is here, it’s a great time to do a little spring cleaning. After a long, tough winter, many of us are looking forward to brightening surroundings. This can happen indoors as well as outdoors if you do a little redecorating. But sprucing up your place can get expensive. There are some ways to change up your environment while staying on a budget.

1. Rearrange

One of the quickest and cheapest ways to redecorate your space is simply to rearrange your furniture. This will cost you a little time and some sweat but you can make the place feel completely different. Change the location of the main pieces of furniture — the couch or the bed, for example — to change up the room.

2. Find New Purpose

You can re-use things you already have to make a room feel like new. For example, you can re-cover a couch or a chair in a new fabric. You can paint a room or refinish a table or dresser for new colors. Or maybe a few small accent pillows can introduce a new color to your living room.

Even if you are bringing in something new, it doesn’t have to be completely new. Try new-to-you or secondhand items.

3. Organize

Having stuff laying around can make your home never feel totally together. But stuffing things into a closet doesn’t always work. For example, you may want easy access to your shoes but you don’t want to constantly trip over them. Try a cheap bookshelf against the wall where you can display the shoes of the season.

Also, try furniture that doubles as storage. Coffee tables with drawers can help you store paperwork. Ottomans with storage can help you store blankets or kids’ toys. Tables that extend when you need them but can be smaller most of the time save on space.

4. Personalize the Walls

It’s one of the last things many people do when they move into a new home. Whether renting or buying a place, hanging things on the wall is often a low priority. But decorating the walls can really personalize your space. You don’t have to spend a lot on fancy artwork either. Frame children’s artwork or personal photos. Add vintage (read used and cheap) mirrors or old posters to any room for an instant update.
