“And the notion of scribbling on a paper check and showing ID is archaic and profoundly slower.”

Really? I am a cashier at Target and am truly amazed that anyone complains about check writers.

Cash payers often take longer rummaging through wallets/purses. So do debit card users who forget pin numbers. So do those cobbling multiple debit/credit cards together to find enough remaining debit/credit balance.

As long as the check is ready and all except the amount is written in advance, it does not take much longer than a smooth debit transaction.

“When debit cards are so much more convenient (and still free to use, at least for now), it’s not unreasonable to suspect that anyone still pulling out a checkbook may be doing so because they don’t have funds to cover their purchase.

Yet another bizarre statement. Elderly check users often simply do not like technology. Some find that actually writing by hand the amount spent helps maintain awareness. Others simply lost their debit cards or have not fixed/activated them.
